Who Are We? The Student Bridges Staff

 

Student Bridges is an Agency of the Undergraduate Student Government Association. Our Staff is comprised mainly of undergraduate staff who set the programmatic direction of the organization and carry out much of the day to day operations of Student Bridges. Additionally we have 3 graduate employees, a Faculty Advisor, and a MACC AmeriCorps *VISTA.

Student Bridges Office/Programmatic Coordinators

 

Undergraduate Programmatic Coordinator: Ben Thompson (2011)

Ben is a double major studying Philosophy and Spanish. He graduated from Xaverian Brothers High School in 2007, and began interning for Student Bridges in the spring of 2008.

Graduate Programmatic Coordinator: Judy Wong (MEd '10)

Judy Wong of the UMass Amherst School Counselor Education Program has been involved with early college outreach since 1999. Judy received her Bachelor of Arts in Politics and Government from the University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, WA.  She previously served as the Graduate Women Network Coordinator for the Graduate Student Senate. She is in her second year as the Graduate Programmatic Coordinator.

Office and Transportation Manager: Jenny Otero (2010)
Jenny is a Senior majoring in Communications and minoring in Women, Gender, Sexuality Studies. She represents the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Her favorite color is green and chocolate is one of the ways to her heart. She enjoys writing and involving herself with wonderful people who care about social justice issues. Jenny loves Student Bridges!
Community Outreach and College Awareness (COCA) Coordinator: Charmaine Santiago-Galdón (2011)
 Is a Theater major and currently in her third year at UMass. Charmaine has worked with youth for more than four years at UMass Boston and wanted to continue her dedication with youth once she began her college career. She  joined Student Bridges as a student of the course. Her interest grew and a semester later she became part of the staff.

Alumni Retention Coordinator: Jelisa Difo (2010)

Double Major in Social Thought and Political Economy and Political Science with a Double Minor in Spanish and Portuguese.  Jelisa has been involved with CASA Dominicana, Cape Verdean Student Alliance and the Student Government Association. She has served on the board of the United States Student Association as the Vice Chair of the Latino Student Caucus. Devoted and committed to the pursuit of free higher education for all. Jelisa is an education enthusiast!

Retention Coordinator: Taleen Nazarian (2009)
Taleen Nazarian is a Public Health major with a collateral in Spanish. She has been involved in various RSO's during her time on campus. Taleen dreams of opening up a non-for-profit center to promote sex health education.

Massachusetts Campus Compact, AmeriCorps* VISTA: Malcolm Chu (BS '09)

Malcolm Chu will be serving as the Massachusetts Campus Compact, AmeriCorps* VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America) to Student Bridges.  Malcolm is from Brooklyn, NY and graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a BDIC major in Public Education and Youth Empowerment. He hopes to return to NY to continue working with and being inspired by young people.

Student Bridges has partnered with STEP/CHOICES afterschool program since 2007. For more information on this partnership see our "Community Partnerships" page.

Jasmin Torrejon (2010)
Majoring in Sociology, Jasmin  strives to see the UMass community evolve around issues of diversity and social justice. Jasmin plans to attend Grad School after she graduates where she will possibly study Law or Latin American Studies. She seeks to incorporate her lens of sociology into today's law to better understand and help society, and plans to travel to Latin America post graduation to explore the continent and its countries through culture and dance. Jasmin has been active in Student Bridges since Spring of 2007.
Tatsuki St. Fort (2011)
My name is Tatsuka St. Fort, everyone calls me Suki. I am a Junior and a sociology major. This is my 3rd semester with Student Bridges. I am from Dorchester, Mass. and I am an R.A. in Southwest. I love long walks on the beach and reading...
 
Peck K-8 Community School (In-School Tutoring) (Holyoke):

Student Bridges has partnered with the Peck K-8 School (formerly Lynch Middle School) since 2007, doing tutor and mentoring during school time as well as participating in Peck's Full Service Community School Initiative. Brittany Regan (2011)

Brittany is a Junior legal studies major with a minor in anthropology.  She began working with Student Bridges through the course in the Fall of 2008 and working with the program in the Spring of 2009.  She plans to continue working with Student Bridges until graduation and maybe even further!

College Awareness & Preparation Workshop Coordinator:

Student Bridges has collaborated with Holyoke High School and other Community partners to provide an array of College Awareness & Partnership Workshops for college bound students. Workshops include: FAFSA, Applying for College, College Tours and much more.

Rose Delorme (2011) 

Rose-Camille Delorme was born on the beautiful island of Haiti. At four she came to the USA where she has lived ever since. Rose loves scrap booking and working with inner city youth. She has worked at the New England Aquarium for five years working with teens and marine animals. Rose is looking forward to a rewarding teaching. She is a Psychology Major. 

Springfield SET (Science, Engineering, Technology) Partnership Coordinators (Springfield):

Student Bridges is excited to begin two new partnerships with the New North Citizens Council and South End Community Center in Springfield to bring College Access Awareness and SET curriculum into their afterschool programs. These partnerships are in collaboration with the UMass 4-H Extension office. For more info see our "Community Partnerships" page.

 

South End Community Center: Shane Coleman (2010)

Shane Coleman is a Senior at UMass Amherst majoring in Astronomy and Space Science. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, and hopes to attend graduate school at UMASS for a Masters in Education. 
 

 New North Citizens Council: Casimir Marziarz (2009)

Casimir Maziarz is a Senior at UMASS Amherst majoring in business administration. He is a resident assistant in the Kennedy dormitory on campus and is involved with numerous activites on campus. He strives to one day become a self made millionaire and give back to his community. 

 

Student Bridges Course Instructors

 
Holyoke Course Instructor: Shuli Arieh Archer (Doctoral Student in Education Policy '13)

Shuli Arieh Archer is a doctoral student in Education Policy and Leadership with a focus in Higher Education. Her research interests include education equality and college access, experiential education, and the experiences of students of color at small colleges. In her spare time, Shuli enjoys bowling and long walks on the beach. This is her first year working with Student Bridges and she is ecstatic. 

Springfield Course Instructor: Beth Mattison (M.Ed. in Social Justice Education)

Student Bridges Faculty Advisor: Dr. Mari Castañeda (Ph.D)

Dr. Mari Castañeda is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at UMass Amherst and will be serving a two-year term as faculty adviser for Student Bridges.  Dr. Castañeda received her BA in Communication Studies and Chicana/o Studies at UCLA in 1993, and completed her Ph.D. in Communication at the University of California, San Diego in 2000.  She is currently the Chair of the National Association for Chicana and Chicano
